Early Hardships: Humble Beginnings
Growing up in Cape Town, South Africa, money was tight. My mom often fought back tears, wrestling with how to feed us four kids on a meagre income. My dad was working hard, but the bills still piled up faster than the pay cheques. The emotional toll was heavy. We were a family on the edge, emotionally and financially.
Fast forward to adulthood years later…
Once upon a time, landing a solid job in Information Technology was my dream goal. I thought I’d hit the jackpot when I secured a role as a Business Development Manager at Hewlett Packard. Something that I would never have been able to accomplish in South Africa. But before long, the reality set in. My work-life balance went out the window, with long hours and constant stress becoming the norm.
But what really gave me pause was looking at my boss, Greg. He was constantly on the road, juggling an even more hectic schedule than mine. The guy had two failed marriages under his belt, and it became clear that his work had taken a toll on his personal life. Seeing Greg’s lifestyle was a wake-up call; it was not a path I wanted to go down. There was nothing about his life that inspired me to continue in the same vein. The promise of a brighter future was not happening for me. And that’s when I knew I had to make a change. I did not want to have the life of my parents. By the time I hit 32, I had enough.
The Australian Dream: A Fresh Start?
We thought moving to Australia would be our saving grace. Our ticket to a better life. It promised a brighter future. But it was extremely stressful moving to a new country having no money and not knowing anyone. I was only 14 years old. Our beginnings in Melbourne was hard on our family. We had left behind everyone we know and love. It was very tough emotionally. We had left behind a large family of over 40 relatives. People we spent most of the time with. Every birthday, event and family occasion. We missed home.
Then came the challenge of me needing to fit in at school. I looked different and spoke different to the other kids. Kids can be very mean when your not one of them. So the high school years were tough on me. I struggled to fit in. I spent a lot of time alone, missing my friends who I’d grown up with. They were very far away, in another country.
Then came my years at university studying Information Technology. My love for computers was both my driving force and sanctuary. I was enamoured with the potential that technology had to change lives and empower businesses. However, the course was no walk in the park. It was packed with complex coding assignments, head-scratching algorithms, and late-night study sessions that often stretched into the early morning.
Despite the intense challenges, my passion for the subject matter never waned. Every struggle became a lesson, and every failure became a stepping stone.
Trading City Life for New Horizons
I was drawn to the quality of life in Northern NSW. So I took a leap of faith, left Hewlett Packard and moved to the Byron Bay area and started my own business. A new chapter had begun. The allure of the Byron Bay Area was simply irresistible to me. Its stunning beaches, positive atmosphere, and the strong sense of community felt like the perfect backdrop for the life I wanted to build.
And it wasn’t just the natural beauty and friendly locals that drew me in. it was also the vibrant entrepreneurial spirit of the region. The area seemed to buzz with innovation and creativity, full of local business owners who were deeply committed to their crafts. This environment resonated with my own goals to make a meaningful impact through my own work. It felt like the ideal setting to not just live, but to truly thrive both personally and professionally. In a way, the Byron Bay Area encapsulated everything I was looking for—a balanced lifestyle, a supportive community, and endless opportunities to grow and help others do the same. I was committed to making the changes to have a great business and work-life balance.
The Real Hustle Begins
However, running a business without any experience was like diving into deep waters without knowing how to swim. My cash flow was a rollercoaster, the bills kept piling up, and forget about free time—I was working longer hours than ever. In short, it was chaos. My stress was through the roof. I was frustrated with my results. Self-doubt crept in and the erosion of my self-confidence made decision-making difficult and my business was suffering. The struggle wasn’t just business – it was deeply personal.
I felt physically and emotionally burnt-out from the long hours and constant juggling of tasks, making it difficult to focus and be productive.
I felt like I was carrying the weight of the world on my shoulders. The sense of responsibility lead to social isolation, and I was feeling like no one else understood what I was going through.
In addition, I felt guilty. All my personal time was being eaten up by my business, and I was neglecting my family, friends, and even myself. I missed important milestones in my children’s lives, and the guilt was unbearable. Every missed soccer game or school event felt like a personal failure, compounding the professional struggles I was already facing.
And I was constantly worried about failing financially. The fear of failure haunted me that the business could collapse anytime.
The cumulative effect of all of these emotional strains led me to feeling almost depressed at times. Affecting not only me, but my partner too.
I felt like all these emotional impacts often clouded my judgement as a business owner. Leading to poor decision-making and a vicious cycle of even more stress and emotional toll.
The money woes haunted my nights. The sinking feeling that the business could crash and burn was always there. Financial instability didn’t just mean a failing business; it meant failing my family, and the thought was agonising.
Light at the End of the Tunnel: The Game Changer
Seeing other business owners thrive, frustrated me. Why couldn’t I figure it all out? They seemed to have a business that was providing them a good life, fulfilling their dreams. That’s when it clicked. I needed to change my game. I needed a plan, a new strategy.
The day that turned my life around was when a mate of mine dragged me to a seminar on the Gold Coast. That was a game-changer. I finally realised that I needed someone to guide me. So, I got myself a business coach, someone who had already walked the path I was wanting to and knew the ropes.
The Fast Track
The moment I got the right guidance, everything started to click. The fog started to lift. My business started making good money. With the right processes and systems in place it allowed me to start living life on my terms. I built it into a national company in the financial services space. The cashflow allowed me and my family a lot of pleasures and privileges. And eventually gave me the luxury to take a seven-year break—yeah, seven whole years—just enjoying life.
